Three generations will comprise our community. Together, elders, children and caregivers will enhance each other’s lives through meaningful relationships and the enduring capacity of people to care.
Children in foster and kinship care are our priority
Children who have been in care longer than 1 year, have no identified permanent home, or are at risk of no permanent home and are between the ages of 6-11 years of age.
Siblings - Children who are related have a more difficult time finding a home simply because they come in numbers of 2 or more
Elder volunteers
Elders who live in the Hope Lights Community will volunteer eight hours per week serving the families, children, or the community in some meaningful way. They will benefit from the relationships they form and will have a community to count on if needed.
In exchange for their volunteer time they receive reduced rents.
Kinship caregivers
Kinship caregivers are Grandparents, aunts, uncles, adult siblings, other kin who care for sibling and relative children rather than see them placed in foster care system. Most often these caregivers are grandmothers who receive little financial or practical support from the state.
Guardianship and adoption are permanency plans we support for kinship caregivers.
Parents
Parents provide children in foster care with permanence, stability and care. Single and two parent households will seek adoption for two to four children in their care.
Reduced housing costs and other practical support will be provided to help alleviate some of the challenges associated with raising a child.
The Hope Lights Community will be designed to encourage communication and community interaction.
There will be 15 single-family homes and multi-family homes for 45 seniors. Also planned are an intergenerational community center for educational programs and social events, an administrative office that will blend into the neighborhood, common spaces, play and recreation areas, and community garden.
The community and homes will be designed using universal design principles and green build technologies.
